….and the 2016 State League Champions are: THE GCS GIANTS!!

The GCS Giants dominated the State League with huge wins over both finalists. The first time we have been able to field a full strength side this whole competition.

The first round saw the North Queensland champions, Kalynda Chase Cavaliers take on the Brisbane Champions BGS Bulldogs. After some very tight tennis the BGS Bulldogs came out on top winning a sudden death tiebreak to take out the final rubber and make it 5-3.

In round 2 of the State League Finals, it was the Giants time to shine. The GCS Giants were relentless, not allowing Kalynda to even register a set until late in the men’s singles tie. The GCS girls were untouchable losing only 3 games in their first 3 rubbers. The Cavs # 1 Vini really pushed the Giants #1, but Lachie proved too strong taking out the final set 4-1. With the score 6-0 coming into the mixed, the Giants did not take their foot off the accelerator taking the final 2 rubbers on offer, with the experience of Lachie, Kaylene, Helen and Carl too much for the younger Cavs.

A rain delayed round 3 was moved to the Tuesday. Winner of this tie, would take home the State League Trophy and a cheque worth $7,500. Again the GCS girls were too strong for their Bulldogs counterparts with Helen and Rachel playing some incredible tennis. The boys had it a bit tougher. After a great display in the doubles from Big Carl and Lachie, the BGS Bulldogs men came out firing in the singles. Thomas Fancutt and Daniel Dossetor both proving too strong for the Giants men in the singles. Coming into the mixed the Giants led 4-2. Pat and Helen again showing their experience by dismantling the younger BGS Bulldogs. Husband Wife duo, Darren and Saki Ormes love a tiebreak, so of course they won their rubber in a double breaker! GAME, SET & MATCH. The Giants winning the final 6 rubbers to 2 and became the inaugural State League Champions.

Brilliant effort from all GCS Giant players who played over the whole competition. We couldn’t have done it without you!
